WEST KOOTENAY CAMERA CLUB 2011 PHOTO SHOW
The West Kootenay Camera Club is proud to host our Annual Photo Show this spring. The Photo Show is an annual juried event of photographic art for both members and non-members alike. We are expecting another great turnout of wonderful images for this year’s event. The judges for the Photo Show are qualified by taking a judging course offered by CAPA (Canadian Association for Photographic Art). They come from varied backgrounds in both photography and the world of art, mostly from B.C. and American camera clubs. The four invited judges bring a great deal of professional expertise to our local event.
The Photo Show was born as the club’s Annual Photo Salon in 1991 and had 21 participants with 73 entries. There were only 3 categories which were Human Interest, Nature and Open. As the years went by, 2 more categories were added.
The competition was renamed the Annual Photo Show in 1996. Since then, the event has since grown to 9 categories and the participation really grew from the public, drawing over 270 entries in recent years. Each category holds ribbons for First, Second, Third and in the event of a tie score for Third an Honorable Mention will be awarded. The deadline for entering the competition is the end of April with ‘judgment day’ happening around the second weekend in May. Every entry is judged by a jury of three and each judge is to give the image a score between 1 and 10. The three numbers are added together to form the image’s points. The best score out of 30 is the winner. Judge’s have a scribe recording the comments given for each entry.
The Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar is the venue for the show’s 3 day event which is held during Sunfest (the first weekend in June) each year. The show opens the Friday morning with the official ‘opening’ that evening. The manned event continues Saturday and Sunday. The winning images are displayed with their respective ribbons and all entries are hung with the scores and comments given by the jury of judges. During the exhibition, an added attraction is the Loonie Prize for the public and the People’s Choice Award for the winning photographer. The public is invited to buy a ticket for a loonie and enter his/her address and phone number and the number of their favorite image at the show. When the show is over Sunday afternoon, a ticket is drawn and the owner of the ticket wins a framed original photograph by one of the members in the club. The photographer with the most votes is the winner of the People’s Choice Award.
